A tradition and special feature of PCI is the Spirit Award, given annually to the band which best demonstrates the spirit of fair play and respect throughout the event. The award is based on behavior in four key areas:

Support for other bands
This category encompasses such things as cheering/rooting for other bands, or any other activity which shows support and appreciation for other competitors.

Respect for property
This includes such things as respect for the property and facilities, not littering, picking up trash, and respect for the property of others.

Treatment of others
This includes such thing as treatment of PCI personnel, chaperones, and other students. It includes use of respectful language by not using foul language. It also considers disrespectful, unsafe, or unruly behavior.

Fair Play
This includes such things as how well the band follows the letter and the spirit of the competition rules.
